At the 11th Hour of the 11th Day of the 11th Month, in 1918, the Armistice to end World War I took effect. Armistice Day which became our National Holiday in 1938 had its named changed to Veteran’s Day in 1954. In 1968, the day of celebration for Veteran’s Day was changed to the fourth Monday in October and it was to take effect in 1971. By 1975, there was enough sentiment against holding the celebrations on the fourth Monday in October that Congress changed the date of Veteran’s Day back to November 11, starting in 1978. On this Day, The Unknown Magic Within Walt Disney World wants to thank all the Veterans that helped to make our country great. I also want to share with you today, the Unknown Magic of the Shades of Green Resort.

The Shades of Green Resort is a Resort in Walt Disney World that very few people know about. It is actually located on Magnolia Palm Drive, which is a road that comes off of the main road that you take to get to the Grand Floridian Resort. Although on Disney Property, this Resort is owned and operated by the United State’s Department of Defense and only Military Families* may stay here; which is why it cannot be found on the Disney World Website when looking for a reservation.

Since the Resort is not a Disney owned resort, it is not themed, as the Disney Resorts are. Instead it has more of a Country Club Setting and it is surrounded by the Magnolia and Palms Golf Courses. The rooms are larger than normal hotel rooms; big enough for families, with two queen beds and a sleeper sofa. They also have either a balcony or a patio. According to the Shades of Green website, these rooms are actually some of the largest in Disney World.

The Shades of Green offers a few different dining options, the Garden Gallery Restaurant, Evergreens, and the Express Café, which all offer a different kind of dining experience. There is also “America, The Ice Cream Parlor” and the Java Café, for your ice cream and coffee needs. (These restaurants are not part of the Disney Dining plan.)

The Magnolia Spa is a three level spa that is located at the Shades of Green. It is operated by Niki Bryan Spa, the current owner and operator of the Grand Floridian Spa, at the Grand Floridian Resort. This is a full service spa with everything from massage therapies to barber and salon treatments. The full spa treatments are offered to anyone over 12 years old, accompanied by an adult, but children 4 to 12 are invited to have selected treatments that promote a healthy lifestyle. There is also a fitness center located on the grounds of the resort as well as a jogging path.

As mentioned above, the Shades of Green is surrounded by two of the PGA Championship Golf Courses that are at Walt Disney World. These two courses, the Magnolia and Palm, are two of the courses used for the Children’s Miracle Network Golf Classic, which starts today in Walt Disney World. There is a touching article about the Children’s Miracle Network Golf Classic and Veteran’s Day in today’s Orlando Sentinel (to read it click here).

Of course being on Disney Property, you also get to enjoy the Walt Disney World Resort, as you see fit. There is a bus that takes you to the Ticket and Transportation center and from there the World is yours.

So, now you know if you are a Military Family there is a special place for you at the Walt Disney World Resort. Although not owned by Disney, it is still a place where Magical Experiences happen all the time. So, as we celebrate Veterans’ Day and Thank You for your service, if you’re military, current or past and are thinking about a trip to Disney, look into the Unknown Magic that is the Shades of Green.

* Eligible Shades of Green guests can also use a Sponsorship program to bring in-laws, grandparents, close family friends and relatives to share in their vacation.
