Andy

We have had some Magical Experiences because of Disney Cast Members. I shared a story about the waitress in Le Cellier that told my son about knowing some of the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team and he still talks about it, six years later. I mentioned Andy at the Boardwalk who made switching rooms a few days into our vacation as easy as walking to the lobby and because of it, we made sure we stopped by and talked to him throughout the rest of our visit (now we exchange Christmas cards). I’m sure everyone who has stayed in Disney World has a special memory of something that a Cast Member did for them. But for people that have not stayed in Disney World, they may not know about this Unknown Magic.

A few weeks ago, I found a book on EBay. It is called The Magic begins with ME: A Happiest Celebration on Earth Keepsake. It was a Cast Member exclusive hardback book that was given out in 2005 for the 50th anniversary of the opening of Disneyland. I can’t read it, not because I am not a Cast Member, but because every single time I start to read it, I have to put it down, because I start to cry. I will admit, I get a little emotional sometimes, but this book makes me blubber like a baby. I can’t read more than a page or two before I start to tear up. I know it’s silly, but I can’ help it. The Magic that the Cast Members give to so many people is amazing to me. The happiness that they give people, the joy they bring children when they are “just doing their job,” makes me well up.

There are stories in the book about A Make a Wish child, and Special needs children, but you expect the Cast Members to give a little more attention to these children. But there are also stories about Cast members going above and beyond to make a child smile. There is one story about a Fast Pass host named Greg that helped make a little girl happy after her two Masks that she made in Epcot were taken. There is another story of Karen a Cast Member who was a handler for Peter Pan when a young girl who had lost her autograph book came through the line for Peter a second time. Recognizing her, they asked her what she was doing coming back so soon. After hearing the story Peter and Karen told her they would get all the other character’s autographs for her. Then later that night Karen delivered it to her in her Resort room. These are the things that Disney Cast Members do that make Disney World and all the Disney Parks Magical.

One of my Favorite Magical things that the Cast Members do In Walt Disney World happens every morning in the Magic Kingdom. As the Park opens and people are making their way up Main Street USA, the Cast Members from all the shops along the street, come out and wave hello, with big Mickey Hand gloves on. It is the neatest thing. It makes me smile every time I see it and I have seen some little kids get all excited and wave and run to them to Hi-Five the Mickey hand. Another thing I love that the cast members do is they play with the kids when they are waiting for the parades or the fireworks. I think it is so neat to see the cast members turning the jump ropes as kids, who were two minutes before that whining to their parents they were bored, are laughing and singing.

The Cast Members are Magical People. Once when we were in the Magic Kingdom, we were heading into the Haunted Mansion. At the same time, there was a large group of people heading in at the same time. Most of them were in their early twenties and there were a few older people, but they were all carrying a binder with them. There were two group leaders who were making comments about different items as we waiting in the queue and I noticed the notebook of one of the young people. It was a new hire orientation. Looking

around the group, my wife and I picked out the new cast Members who were going to do great with the company. They were the ones that you could tell were just as excited as we were about riding the Doom Buggy.

In the Book I mentioned above, there is a quote from Walt that reads:

The First Year I leased the parking concession, brought in the usual security guards- things like that-but I soon realized my mistake. I couldn’t have outside help and still put over my idea of hospitality. So now we recruit and train every one of our employees.

With this in mind, I’m sure the training is very important when it comes to Cast Members, but I think the recruitment process is even more significant. You can tell that Disney only hires the people that will be able to help bring the Magic to the guests. You see it every day in Walt Disney World; from the cast members working the front desks to the Cast Members that work the attractions, they bring the Magic.

After reading The Magic begins with Me, I realize there is one thing I have never done in Disney World That I think I need to do, send a letter and say Thank You to a Cast Member.

You can still find this book on EBay; search The Magic Begins with Me and there are a few up for auction.

As mentioned in previous posts, The Walt Disney Company believes that everything they do is a show. For this reason, their workers are called Cast Members. The Walt Disney World Cast Members are unbelievable people. In my many travels to Disney World, I have come in contact with probably thousands of Cast Members and 99.99999% of them have been wonderful people that made our trips Magical Experiences. I’m sure I’ve had one or two here and there over the years that I thought was having a bad day, but most of the time, actually almost all the time, you never know if they are having a bad day. On the whole, the Cast Members are really great at helping to

create the magic. People like Andy at the Boardwalk or Dallas at the Hoop De Doo Revue, are just a couple of examples of Cast Members that know what
the Magic is and actually make sure you Experience it.

Last year when we were eating in Le Cellier in the Canada Pavilion in Epcot, we were waited on by a very nice young lady that was from Nova Scotia. My son who is a big Sidney Crosby and Pittsburgh Penguins fan, made a comment about Crosby being from Nova Scotia. Our waitress started talking hockey with us and actually told us she

not only knew Crosby, but is good friends with Marc-Andre Fleury, The Penguins goaltender. Then she shared with us her experience of when the Penguins won the Stanley Cup last year. If it weren’t for her name tag saying her name and where she was from, we would have missed out on a Very Special Experience.

That is today’s Unknown Magic. Every Cast Members’ name tag lists where they are from. This is pretty neat when you see people that are from your area of the country and also maybe from your state. We were in the Conservation Station (in Animal Kingdom) last summer, and it seemed like most of the Cast Members working there seemed to come from the Philadelphia/New Jersey Area. Being from New Jersey, we talked to a lot of these people about “home.”

When you are in Epcot’s World Showcase, you will notice that all the Cast Members working at the different pavilions are from those countries. A lot of them are part of the Disney International Program. Everyone of the Cast Members that we have come in contact with in Epcot, have always been very eager to talk about their home country, and share their culture with us. It is very neat to discuss with someone their home town, and ask questions about how Disney has designed the buildings and areas in Epcot, as compared to these hometowns.

These experiences can be had all over Walt Disney World, You can meet and talk to people from places that you know or just want to know more about. The Cast Members are normally friendly outgoing people, but when you start talking to them about their hometowns, they seem to be even more Excited and Talkative.

So, now you know, when you come in contact with a Cast Member, read where they are from, You might be in store for a Magical Experience you might never have seen coming.

>A quick shot of part of the Parade from the Animal Kingdom. I love the tough looking security guard laughing at the performers. Enjoy the Parade!

In my article Oh, How Silly I wrote this past week about how we make our kids look silly in different pictures, when we are in the Walt Disney World Resort. My son is a good sport and gave his permission for me to use the pictures I did, which was nice of him (not that I wouldn’t have used them anyway), but we did have a conversations about him not being the only one that looks silly at times when we are in Disney. So, fair being fair, I decided that I should share some moments when my wife and I have gotten a little Goofy and it was caught by a camera. So, here is to the Unknown Magic of letting it all go and looking Goofy in Disney.
This first two pictures I used in the other article about making my son look silly.

This next picture is a way to make anyone look Goofy. All you have to do is take them on a wet ride and then take them to watch to It’s Tough to be a Bug and have them put on the 3-D glasses.

Yes, a person’s face in a cut out does look goofy, no matter what the gut out is.

And anytime you have baby dolls stuck to an apron you are wearing it is kind of goofy.

When it comes to being in a picture with characters I have a little too much fun, check out my son’s face he isn’t as excited as I am.

This picture probably wouldn’t be silly except for the Tiki God’s butt off of my left shoulder.
I hope you have enjoyed my goofiness, but of course I can’t write about being Silly in Disney without at least one picture of my son.

Last week, I wrote about Disney’s Christmas Decorations in the Resorts.  They are amazing. But in Walt Disney World, they not only decorate in the Resorts, but they also decorate in the Parks. And as with the Resorts, the Parks are sometimes not seen by many people, because they don’t get to travel to Disney World during the Holidays. So for those of you that don’t get to see the parks during the Holidays, I present the Unknown Magic of Christmas Decorations in the Disney World Parks.

Every park has a Christmas tree and every park has special decorations around the park. Most of the trees are found in the front of the parks; sometimes, inside, sometimes outside. The Tree at Disney Hollywood Studios for example is outside of the park. As you walk toward the front gate, the tree is off to the side of the entrance. And as you walk down Hollywood Boulevard, the street is decorated with garland and other decorations. At the Animal Kingdom, the Park is decked out in Christmas, and the tree is right in front of the park, and the decorations are wild animals and African masks and things that relate to the park.

Of course Christmas in the Magic Kingdom is as special as everything else in the Magic Kingdom. Main Street USA is decorated with special Christmas ornaments and music. The tree in the Magic Kingdom can be found in the Town Square Center. What a Magical Experience as you enter the park and see a huge Christmas Tree with Cinderella Castle in the Background. I don’t think there is anything more Magical or exciting; except maybe seeing Santa in the Magic Kingdom, which you can also do.

My Favorite is the Christmas in Epcot. Each of the countries has their pavilions decorated for Christmas and each has special performances and appearances by the gift giver that visits that Country. For Example at the United Kingdom Pavilion, Father Christmas makes appearances, while La Befana can be seen in Italy. This is a very neat Magical Experience, especially for kids, because they can learn about the customs of other countries. At the American Pavilion, they tell the history of Christmas, Kwanzaa and Hanukkah. The Epcot tree is at the entrance to the World Showcase.

Even Downtown Disney is decorated for the Holidays also, with what I think is the best tree on the whole property. Outside Once upon a Toy Store, the tree is fabulously decorated with toys and games and all sorts of Magical Things. This tree isn’t the only thing that is decorated for Christmas, but I think it is one of the neatest. Also in Downtown Disney, they have the Disney Days of the Christmas store, which is open all year around. They even have a tree in the DisneyQuest Building.

So, now you know, Christmas isn’t just celebrated in the Resorts, the Parks also offer Magical Experiences during the Holidays. There is so much Christmas Cheer for you, you may miss some of it, if you don’t take the time to look and listen for the Spirit of the Season.

**Make sure you come back next Monday to read Part III, the Special events at Christmastime in Walt Disney World.
